Grammar Notes: First conditional

Original examples for study (not copied from any textbook).

1. Basic pattern

If + present idea + comma + will + result. You use this for realistic future consequences.

Example: If the tram line opens next year, the town will attract more visitors.

2. Clause order

You can put the result first: We will save time if the express train stays on schedule. No comma is needed before if when if comes second.

3. No “will” in the if-clause

Avoid if + will for a simple future condition. Say if the route opens, not if the route will open.

4. Will be able to

In the result clause, will be able to + verb often replaces can so both parts use will clearly.

Example: If the app works offline, riders will be able to check maps without Wi-Fi.
